Now that it’s the new year, you might be coming up with resolutions to improve yourself over the upcoming months. While traveling more often, going to the gym, and eating healthier are some of the staple practices people choose, you might want to consider your oral health as well! After all, having a healthier smile can boost both your overall well-being and self-confidence! Read on to learn five New Year’s resolutions you can try to promote a safe and beautiful smile.

#1: Practice Flossing More Often

Although brushing your teeth is an essential part of your daily cleaning routine, flossing is also crucial for maintaining your pearly whites. This is a habit that’s typically forgotten, as nearly 33% of Americans don’t floss routinely or whatsoever. Also, brushing only cleans about 60% of your smile, whereas dental strands can go between your teeth and beneath your gum line where bacteria and plaque accumulate the most. To get this habit rolling, try setting reminders on your phone or leaving notes for yourself to floss more often.

#2: Choose Healthier Meals

Your diet is essential for both your oral and overall health. Everyone knows that overindulging in sugary treats can wreak havoc on your smile, increasing the risk of bacteria and cavities. To prevent this, make sure to choose more vitamin-rich, nutrient-dense foods to promote healthier teeth. These can include fresh fruits, crunchy veggies, dairy products, and lean protein.

#3: Replace Your Toothbrush Every Three Months

According to the American Dental Association, you should be replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. Over time, the bristles can become worn down, losing their effectiveness for scrubbing food, plaque, and bacteria off your smile. To ensure you’re using reliable dental tools, be sure to disinfect your toothbrush weekly and replace it every quarter.

#4: Avoid Unhealthy Oral Habits

Do you tend to bite your nails, chew on ice, or use your teeth as tools? Are you a smoker? These are only a few examples of unhealthy dental habits that could ruin a smile in the long run. The last thing you’d want is to struggle with oral health issues like gum disease and worn-down teeth.

#5: Schedule Dental Visits Twice a Year

Other than implementing good oral hygiene, you should consider visiting your dentist every six months. Not only will they polish your pearly whites, but they’ll also provide necessary treatments for any developing issues they may detect. This can help you protect your teeth and gums while avoiding more serious problems in the future.

Now that it’s the new year, it’s the perfect time to start implementing ways to improve your smile. Keep these resolutions in mind, and you’ll set yourself up for healthier teeth in the next few months and beyond!
